for the past few days we heard
that there could be some severe weather this weekend
we watched the radar as it approached on sunday morning
and we watched the clouds as the storm moved closer
they were unlike anything we had seen before
the more we watched
we were pretty sure we were going to be getting hit directly
but we had no idea what that REALLY meant
until the hail started to fall
i was recording it on my phone
until the wind picked up and the hail grew in size
70 mile per hour winds
and golf ball size hail
don't mix well
the window next to where i was recording broke
and i knew it was time to stop
stacey was watching out the front
but as soon as windows started breaking upstairs
he and the boys came to the basement with me
and we went to a corner behind the stairs
the windows all seemed to be compromised at this point
and with the wind as strong as it was
we were afraid of glass blowing in
as soon as things started to calm down
we came out to access the damage
initally we couldn't believe how much the hail was that we saw
we also couldn't believe the river of water and hail flowing down our street -
the drains were clogged by ice and leaves so the water was just flowing
once the threat of getting hit by hail passed
we went out to try to collect some -
it was crazy how some of the pieces were flat and some were round
some were small
and many were very big
a lot of the ones we found were ping pong ball size
but several were as large or larger than a golf ball
whatever the case -
it was enough to do some serious damage to our house
our siding looked as though someone had gone thru and shot out one side of it
our windows across the back are all broken -
16 window panes
the plants across the back of the house did not fair well either
all around the neighborhood there were leaves
shingle pieces and glass
BUT
we got very lucky that most of our trees are young
because neighborhoods near us with older trees did not do as well
we had 3 windows where the hail broke thru
a screen and both panes of glass
thankfully it wasn't enough that we had water pouring in
in a few of the windows
water was collecting
and we can now say our house is definitely level ;)
the grass looks like we had a herd of deer living back there -
holes everywhere :)
apparently just west of here they had a lot of smaller hail
and it was clogging the streets enough that they called out the snow plows
to clear the roads -
it was quite the day ...
lots of firsts for us ...
lots of time spent talking to neighbors ...
and LOTS of guys coming door to door
trying to convince us why we should let them fix our house.
i'm glad we're all safe
and i'm glad that God found the perfect time to drop a storm -
with drew leaving for camp today
i haven't had time to think about his being gone
because i've been too busy picking siding pieces out of my grass.
